3 High school education in South Korea is not compulsory but most students attend and it lasts for three years High schools are divided into general high schools and vocational high schools General schools are usually assigned through a lottery system based on the residential area In the case of special purpose high schools students can gain admission through separate exams Types of special purpose high schools include art high schools science high schools foreign language high schools and specialized vocational education high schools
